If you’re completely new, play it by yourself. Understand how the game flows and get used to how items work.
Then forget how the game flows and go into a pub (public) game. Plenty of custom games with the word “DOTA” in them.
A FAQ with this kind of newbie information will be created.
Seriously, man. Kids Players will just shout “NO DL,” “boot,” “kick,” anything to get that downloading player out. Usually it’s not worth the time to let them download. Even if they’re good. Even if you don’t know the guy yelling “KICK” sucks royal ass.

That is because these players are all so impatient. They are a generation who have been giving what they want when they want it.
On the other hand, people who have to download maps are either brand new to the game or don’t play much and therefore suck. Playing with or against sucky players almost always leads to a boring game or a horribly painful one.
